Wally Brando's speech

As we know in the book, the Lewis & Clark expedition is extremely important to the history of the town. Lewis met the natives and they told him about the ring, the lodge, and how to reach it.
I don't know if it's just a funny fact or something important to the story, but Wally's speech mentions it, which I find very very curious.

My family, my friends, I have crisscross this great land of ours countless times. I hold to map of it here in my heart.
