Season 3 Chronology Theories

Post by nlincy »

Hello everyone! Lynchland Facebook page made me come here. Bravo to Roland's work! I am from France as him, but I will write in English - hopefully without grammar mistakes...

Here are my theories about the chronology. My guess is that it is all about "Is It Future, or Is It Past?" and "Time and Time Again" : those two sentences are said at the very beginning of each Black Lodge scenes in PART 2.

That is why I think that season 3 may be cut in two halfs: one is past, the other is present.

Past: Mister C., The Buckhorn Case, New York, The FBI quartet
Present : Twin Peaks, The Good Dale, Las Vegas

I've done fan edits videos based on that theory, you can see them on my personal blog if you want! http://tp3theories.canalblog.com/archiv ... index.html
Is It Future Or Is It Past ?
Is It Future Or Is It Past ?
Here is that possible chronology. I must thank HockeyMask from another TP-Forum, because I used his work of descriptions to make it.

Some notes:

The link between Past and Present may be the scene in PART 8, where Mister C. has Bob taken off him. What if Cooper now turns into a Doppleganger without Bob in him? He could then find a new identity to escape from Phillip Jeffries killers: he becomes Dougie Jones.

It works with the timeline of Jeffries: Phillip wants to be "with Bob again" (PART 2), but Cooper escapes from the call of the Lodge (PART 3, where Mister C. would in fact see his future self, Dougie, in a vision of the Lodge). Then Phillip asks Ray to kill Cooper. Ray fails (PART 8), so Phillip sends new snipers to kill Cooper-Dougie, with the help of Mr Todd in Las Vegas (PART 2 "tell her she has the job", and following PARTS 3-7 until Ike The Spike is send at Lucky 7 to kill Cooper).

The "Is it future or is it past?" sentence in PART 2 may indicates other things concerning the time of events: first, that PART 1 and 2, aired as a 1H50 film at first, shows us many things from the "future". As The Good Dale is still in the lodge, chronology of PART 1 & PART 2 is just like time in the Lodge: confused.

The first scenes we see in Twin Peaks may, in fact, happen during Day 3 :

- Jacoby receives the shovels... why wouldn't he paint then immediately? In PART 3, he paints them, and he has the same clothes, the weather is also the same. = the scene in PART 1 could be a flash-forward of Jacoby receiving the shovels, at Day 3.

- In the scene with Lucy and the insurance man, Lucy wears the same clothes that later in PART 1 even if the editing makes us believe that is the next day, in the scene were Andy and her listen to Hawk for the first time about the "missing thing".

So, in fact, the first scenes in Twin Peaks in PART 1 would go like this: Day 3 - Day 2 - Day 1.

Day 3 : Jacoby receives the shovels

Day 2 : Lucy talks to the insurance man (blue sweater)

Day 1 : Margaret phones Hawk about the "missing thing"

Then, we see DAY 2 again: Lucy (same blue sweater) and Andy talks with Hawk about Margaret's phone call.

The New York scenes show us more obviously that effect of "is it future or is it past?" and "Time and Time again": Sam and Tracey are killed by "the experiment" in PART 1, and we see them alive in PART 3, just before the get killed, when Cooper goes through the glass box.

And there is the Glastonbury Grove scene. I am really convinced that this scene happens at Day 5 (end of PART 7). First, because Hawk never goes to take the tea with Margaret as he promised.

Also, it makes sense that he has the idea to come back to Glastonbury after the discovery of the missing pages from Laura's Diary, about The Black Lodge. It's in that scene where he talks to Frank Truman (beginning of PART 7) that Hawk really understands that the Good Dale is still be trapped in the Black Lodge, and that he has to go to Glastonbury Grove, under the sycamore trees.

We may see the consequence of that in PART 9.

For the other sentence, "Time and time again", it matches with the theory about PART 5 and PART 7 restarting the days of PART 4 and PART 6. Some fans have seen that, in PART 5, Cooper-Dougie goes out of his house with the same clothes that in PART 4. Same for Janey-E and Sonny Jim. So, PART 5 went back to the beginning of the Day we saw in PART 4! Moreover, the shot of Sonny Jim blinking in the car is edited in reverse, which could be a clue that this episode "rewinds" to the previous day.

As for PART 7, it is quite the same. Two possibilites: PART 7 continues the same day after PART 6. Or, it goes back and shows parallele scenes during the same day, as it did with PART4 and 5.

My theory is that Part 1 and 2 do that a lot too, within each episode. Like a spiral. At the beginning (PART 1 & 2), time goes back to its beginning very quickly. And, after PART 3 (when Cooper comes back to "earth"), the timeline gets more and more "normal".

Maybe, in the next episodes, past and present will meet (Mister C. will become Dougie?), and Time will stop repeat itself! Also, all the scene will be in the present.

Thank you very much Facundo!

Well, maybe it's all wrong! I'd love it too if it were all present. In both case, Dougie Jones, having wife and kids, is a true mystery.

For the chronology, the scene in Part 3 where we see in parallel Mister C. vomit in his car and Dougie vomit in Rancho Rosa is the only scene that could proove that it all happens at the same time, in the present. But it could be a "trick" too, a parallel edit between future and past of the Doppelganger. Maybe we will know in Part 9! It is so exciting. A true masterpiece, that 3rd season...

Re: Season 3 Chronology Theories

So Part 9 seems to invalidate the Past/Present theory! The scene with Mr Todd seems to prove that the multiple timelines theory doesn't work, as Mister C. asks him to eliminate Dougie. Dougie and Mister C. exist at the same time (and that's even more fascinating). Regarding the Twin Peaks scenes, they must take place around the same times too: the key send by Jade arrives some days later at the Great Northern.

Nevertheless, new little things in Part 9 made me wonder about a "tricky" timeline, despite Mr Todd's scene. So I'll continue to be "Mister Multiple Timeline" just for fun. :D

- First scene with Lucy, she has a white shirt with red pattern, and red and blue wool sweater (around 22'00). Next scene with Lucy, different clothes: blue sweater and another shirt (another pattern on the collar) (35'00). Did the episode showed us 2 different days? Did the ellipse occured in the black cut after Jerry's hallucinations?

- So Frank Truman says the 10/1 and the 10/2 are "two days from now, and the day after". It means that Andy's watch was set badly, or that we came back in the past since Part 7. Hawk still have not mentionned his visit to Glastonbury Grove, even now that they are reading Brigg's indications. Once again, maybe that scene in Part 1 happens after that new discovery.

- At the end we see once again Au Revoir Simone, which was already on part 4... Did they came back to the Roadhouse some days after, or are we in the past? It is also in Part 4, the evening before (on the first part of the episode, before sunrise, that Bobby mentions her mother Betty knowing something about Cooper. So, it is possible that the scene with Betty happens the same day that Part 4, the day after Bobby's speech to Hawk & Frank, and before the Au Revoir Simone concert.

Actually I don't stand for one theory more than another! It's just those little details, it keeps making you wonder...

After all, maybe there is 3 timelines but with a very small shift? Mister C.'s timeline, Dougie's timeline, and Twin Peaks timeline are maybe separated by a few days only. Maybe Andy's watch was rightly set in Part 7, but that the Twin Peaks scenes are secretly edited in a strange way.

Ahah, thank you! Once again I must say that Hockey Mask (from another Lynch-forum) did the biggest part of the job doing all the descriptions and timeline. He just stayed to the facts. I just did my personal theories on it!

So in Part 9, Lucy changes clothes, so maybe we see 2 different days, maybe it's just an error...

Other strange fact:
- Andy doesn't mention his investigation about the truck of the accident, and his appointment at 4:30, "near the Joneses", as seen in Part 7
- Nobody speaks about the death of the little boy, seen in Part 6. However the scene with Andy in Part 7 seemed linked with that.

May Part 6 & 7 really happen the 10th as shown on Andy's watch? And Part 9 on the 29th, so, before?

Or Andy just didn't set his watch right.

Nlincy, maybe I'm not seeing something. Why do you choose that particular date on september? What do you have into account? Just Hastings investigation?

(Spoiler from part 9 if any french friend haven't seen it yet)
Briggs says in his note that the portal will open the first of October at 2:53. This is the same date that we see on the part 3 in "American Girl" watch (Ronette)

As Nicolas points out in his entry here, there's something strange about Hawk's initial visit to Glastonbury Grove in Part 2. There's absolutely no reason he would go there so fast in a "normal timeline" and I also suspect it has not happened "yet".

It seems clearer and clearer (in my opinion, of course...) that there's no "global linear chronology".

Depending on the characters, we see different days in each episode, and they can reappear several episodes later, even if it's the same day for them.
Example : Jerry is still in the forest in daylight in part 9, and I think it's shortly after we see him in part 7, calling Ben.
Another example : the colonel calls someone in part 7, and I guess he's calling Gordon, as we see in part 9.
And we've probably seen several events far "in advance" : Hawk going to Glastonbury Grove in part 2 ? Very strange indeed...
So it's even stranger and more complex than we thought at the beginning (parts 1 and 2).
Dale Cooper is not what he seems...

I'm also with this. It's impossible for him to know "when" will it open. The police knew about Glastonbury Grove, in fact, Andy and Truman (I don't remember if Hawk too..) were there in the last episode but he knew WHEN. I'm pretty sure that this scene is settled on the October 2nd. And Cooper doesn't appear because he got out as Dougie.. maybe?
